While Liberty Dies

With an adept sleight of hand, the President of the United States declared his respect for religious freedom while maneuvering to trample the conscience of Catholic believers.  Abortion and birth control are important to would be autocrats because it gives them power over life and death.

The battle for freedom has always been religious in nature.  It is the struggle between the man who would be a god and the God who became a man.  The tyrant would usurp the authority of God by demanding the allegiance of the masses, and the spiritually free are a roadblock to the subjugation of humanity.

The question that needs to be asked is, why is it so important to the President to challenge the resolve of the Catholic Church?

The challenge presented to Catholicism seems to have been designed to test their resolve.  President Obama maneuvered to force the Church to choose between its allegiance to God and the expedience of continuing their mission.  He pushed them into a corner then offered a compromise.  The compromise accomplishes the same goal.  Forcing the insurance companies to provide the means of preventing life is a de facto triumph for the administration.  The Catholic Church will still be paying for contraceptives, but he gave them an out to ease their conscience.  By making the insurance companies the catalyst for his will, the Church becomes a hapless accomplice.

Every moral compromise moves Americans into the stocks of servitude.  Trading off a small piece of our integrity to avoid confronting inimical political action hamstrings our ability to claim the high moral ground.

These actions are designed to minimize the influence of the Church on popular culture.  After all, if the Church can be changed through compromise, then it just becomes another political voice.  Its divine origin is eradicated and must compete on the same level as the usurpers.   Every believer, Protestant, Catholic and Jew, must stand as one against this nefarious encroachment.  The government must not be allowed to dictate the moral conscience of the Church.  It is to God that we stand or fall.  If the laws of the land threaten the laws of God it is incumbent that every believer peacefully resist.  There is no greater act of tyranny than for a government to assume power over the individual conscience; that is within the purview of God alone, who is beneficent and just.

Christians should be the best citizens any country has.  Obeying just laws is mandated by the Word of God.  However, when those laws demand that we deny our God and lessen the premium of life, then our first allegiance is to our Creator.  It is becoming increasingly clear that government revels in dealing in death and the prevention of life.  God is the God of the living.  We must stand for life.

But Peter and the apostles answered and said, “We must obey God rather than men. -Acts 5:29
